Spanish validation of the Sexual Addiction Screening Test.
2018
Background and aims Sexual addiction is a pathological behavior characterized by a combination of excessive sexual desire and impaired ability to control it. Its incidence ranges between 1.2% and 32.2%, although this number may vary depending on the screening tool used. This wide variability is largely due to the use of non-validated instruments (e.g., structural validity relying on exploratory analyses, instruments translated without an additional validation process, or instruments validated in another format). To deal with these limitations, this study tested the psychometric properties of the Spanish paper-and-pencil and online versions of the Sexual Addiction Screening Test (SAST). Met…
Therapy of erectile dysfunction (ED) with sildenafil improves quality of life (QoL) and partnership (QoP)
2004
According to Maslow [1] and others, higher levels of individual and social functioning can only be achieved and maintained, when more basic and particularly physiological levels of functioning are satisfactory and healthy (Fig. 1). Satisfactory partnership and sexuality are core aspects of human wellbeing through the complete course of adulthood. Sexual activity is a major determinant of sexual satisfaction [2]. In men and women, sexual dysfunction as a disorder of sexual desire, arousal, or orgasm, and/or sexual pain results in personal distress and reduced quality of life and interpersonal relationships [3, 4, 5, 6]. Erectile dysfunction (ED) as the inability to attain or maintain penile …
Do women have a hidden heat period?
2002
This article aims to throw light on the controversial topic of whether women have a 'heat' period within their menstrual cycle. The majority of publications in this field report, in addition to a periovulatory peak, no changes at all or even rises in male- and female-initiated sexual activity, woman's sexual desire, autosexual activity and sexual arousability, and interpersonal sexual activities during the mid-follicular and late luteal phases. The lack of a distinct pattern of women's sexual behaviour across the menstrual cycle may be explained by the interplay between cyclical endocrine fluctuations and many psychological, social, cultural and environmental factors, as well as the methodo…
Predictors of Sexual Satisfaction in Women: A Systematic Review.
2021
Abstract Introduction The increasing research interest in sexual satisfaction corresponds to a large amount of studies which focus on different singular determinants without establishing a common model for its explanation. Objectives The purpose of this review is to systematically identify and evaluate the structure and results of the current research about sexual satisfaction in heterosexual women in a long-term relationship. Methods A systematic literature search using Web of Knowledge, ProQuest and PSYNDEX was conducted from January 2004 to October 2019. In total, 1,649 studies published in the last 15 years were extracted from the databases with a systematic keyword search. Through a mu…
Sexual desire and sexual activity of men and women across their lifespans: results from a representative German community survey
2007
OBJECTIVES To present data on sexual desire and sexual activity from a representative survey of men and women covering the total age range of the adult German population, as previous studies have usually been based on samples selected for gender (either men or women) and age (ageing populations). SUBJECTS AND METHODS A representative sample of 2341 men and women aged 18-93 years were surveyed to determine frequency and intensity of sexual desire and sexual activity, and their social, individual and interpersonal characteristics. RESULTS Sexual desire declined with advancing age; overall, men reported more frequent and stronger sexual desire than women. However, there were important interact…
Fundamental frequency of the female's voice: A cross-country empirical study on its influence on social and sexual selection
2020
Recent studies demonstrate that voice (in particular, its fundamental frequency -Fo-) may influence on social and sexual selection. Here, we tested how the Fo of female's voice is related to different aspects of social and sexual selection through a novel experimental approach. First, we recorded and measured the Fo of 22 women reading a neutral text in Spanish language. Six of these voices were selected and classified into three categories: voices with a low Fo (225 Hz). Then, these voices were rated by two independent samples including both men and women: one comprised of native Spanish-speakers (n = 683) and the other comprised of native Italian non-Spanish-speakers (n = 484). Contrarily…
Sexuality and Cancer in the Aged/Aging Population
2017
Cancer as a special topic in the senior group is not much discussed in the professional literature, and the same goes for sexuality in old age. That apparent accumulation of taboos does not offer justice to the reality of many aging patients and their partners. There are several arguments to pay proper attention to sexuality in the group of aging cancer patients.
Sexual Dysfunctions and Their Association with the Dual Control Model of Sexual Response in Men and Women with High-Functioning Autism
2019
Adults with an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) are characterized by impairments in social interaction and communication, repetitive and stereotyped interests and behaviours as well as hyper- and/or hyposensitivities. These disorder specific symptoms could be associated with the development of sexual disorders. The Dual Control Model of Sexual Response presents one approach that is frequently used to explain the emergence of sexual dysfunctions. The aim of the present study was to assess the extent of symptoms of sexual dysfunctions in men and women with ASD and to evaluate their association with the individual propensity of sexual excitation and inhibition as defined by the Dual Control Mode…
Correlations between hormones, physical, and affective parameters in aging urologic outpatients.
2004
Abstract Objective: To determine the relationship between sex hormones, physical complaints, depression, sexuality, and life satisfaction in aging men. Methods: 263 outpatients aged 40 years and above ( M =56.2; 40–84 years) were recruited from 6 andrological outpatient departments in Germany to evaluate "aging male" symptoms. Subjects were assessed by standardised self-report questionnaires, physical, and endocrinological examination. Results: Total and free testosterone as well as DHEA-S (dehydroepiandrosterone-sulfate) levels decreased significantly with age. SHBG (sex hormone binding globulin) and LH (luteinizing hormone) increased; estradiol remained unchanged. Inactivity, lower urinar…
